What is ALS?

ALS, also known as "Lou Gehrig's disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. There is no cure and only one drug approved by the FDA that extends survival for a few months. People with ALS lose their ability to initiate and control muscle movement, which often leads to total paralysis and death within two to five years of diagnosis.

For unknown reasons, veterans who have served in the military are twice as likely to develop ALS as the general population. Research is currently being done to discover treatments and a cure.

Meet Chuck Schretzman

Army LTC (Retired) and former Army West Point football player Chuck Schretzman was diagnosed with ALS in April of 2015. After 26 years in the Army and 4 combat deployments, Chuck was looking forward to a new career path as a Vice President of Operations for a fantastic company. Chuck is a true warrior in every sense of the word. He is a fearless leader who inspires all around him and lives by the creed, "Those who stay...will be champions!" His wife, Stacy, is his ultimate confidant and together they have three beautiful kids: Zack (West Point Class of 2014), Olivia (West Point class of 2015), and Chloe (If daddy has his way... West Point Class of 2022). ALS will not define him! He vows every single day, "I am gonna fight hard!!" and also says... "Damn it...someone has to beat this...why not me!"
